MARI THE EDUCATOR
I obtained a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry (UJ) and a postgraduate diploma in Microbiology (WITS) during 2007 and 2008 respectively.
After graduation, I worked at Lancet Laboratories as a Laboratory Technician and thereafter in the laboratory equipment sales industry.
For the past eight years, I have been a passionate Physical Science and Biology teacher and I was promoted to Subject Head for sciences at the time. In 2017, I was promoted to Academic Manager of that same Science Department. I have also completed my post-graduate diploma in education and am registered at SACE (12214524).
As Science is my passion, I am eager to share my knowledge and expertise in the science field. It is my goal to combine my range of experience with my ability to be compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent teacher who will make a positive contribution to, and impact on, the lives of my learners.
THE MARI MAGIC
External tutoring has become more and more popular over the years. When I was at school in the early 2000’s, it was a very rare occurrence to attend an extra lesson. The first extra lesson I attended was just before my final matric exams. I was used to sitting with my class notes and textbook and figuring out what I did not understand at that point. I got through high school with a few distinctions here and there but do think that my marks would have been better if I had external help.
I completed my BSc degree and the subjects that I chose to study were not easy at all! I spent many hours researching in the library and consulting with fellow students to try and improve my marks by trying to better my understanding. The blood sweat and tears that went into completing my degree was all worth it. I even completed a postgraduate degree after finishing those challenging years. As my years of study went by, I discovered a pattern in the techniques that helped me to improve my marks. Assistance from people who had experience and the proper use of resources changed my life.
The idea of BrainPowered was sparked before we were hit by Covid-19 in South Africa. I have always wanted to reignite the passion of science in students and feel now that this academic uncertainty felt by students is making it more difficult to do so. They might be feeling insecure about their future and that is where I feel I can make a difference. I want to be the one that students reach out to, to improve their marks or to clarify certain topics in science. BrainPowered a tool that I want to use to make the lives of many students easier and more interesting!
